Here are my favorite books and videos on the unicorn, the most popular of all mythical beasts. Most links are for more info at Amazon.com, an affiliate. Also available on my Web site is a reader’s theater adaptation of part of Peter Beagle’s The Last Unicorn.

The Truth About Unicorns, by James Cross Giblin, HarperCollins, 1991. Though written for young people, this book stands out as a well-written and up-to-date summary of unicorn lore for all ages—the best introduction available.

The Lore of the Unicorn, by Odell Shepard, Allen & Unwin, London, 1930 (reprinted by Dover, New York, 1993). The classic in the field, and a delight to read. Shepard was a true lover of the unicorn and explores his subject in the relaxed and philosophical prose of another age. Though lacking later knowledge of the Indian roots of the unicorn, this book is still a must read.

The Last Unicorn, by Peter S. Beagle, Ballantine, 1969. My favorite unicorn novel—actually, one of my favorite novels, period.

Legend, directed by Ridley Scott, Universal, 1985. My favorite unicorn video.
